Women’s 5k Classic

October 16, 2011

Saturday morning started out like a lot of my weekend mornings have lately – with a race!  This time the Women’s 5k Classic!

The Women’s 5k Classic is more than a 5k!  It is an all women run and walk to benefit women’s health causes and all the money stays locally!  This year around 5,500 women participated and the event raised $200,000.  Before the race comes the expo though!  The expo is held the night before at a local college and it is crazy!  Not only are packets available for pickup, there are also many local health related offices and vendors there giving out free pens and trying to get you to enter their raffle.IMG_6998

There are some great highlights – free cookie with pink m&ms, ice cream made by Air Products, hmm…these are all food perks.  :)  It is a little nuts but a great event to get you excited for the morning!

Despite living 1/4 mile from the Lehigh Parkway where the race is, my friend Kendall and her mom actually picked me up and I got a ride with them.  The three of us participated in this race last year, but this year they were joining me on the run instead of the walk.  The event starts around 9am and includes a speaker, a survivor walk, and a group warm up before the race around 9:40.

It was cold!!  I knew it would be good running weather though – just the standing around was rough.

Lots of pink and teal (this year’s race shirt color for ovarian cancer) as far as the eye can see.  We were standing pretty close to the front.

Since I run in this park the route was pretty standard except it was the opposite direction around the loop from most smaller 5ks and there was one part where the race veered off towards the State Troopers building instead of going along the river.

I ran a slower pace than normal to run with Kendall and her mom and because I hadn’t done any form of physical activity since my half marathon last weekend!  Also this race, with that many people, is definitely more about the experience than the race itself.  There are so many women on the course that there is a ton of weaving and it is pretty impossible to run at an even pace.

If you’re a beginning runner and you want some motivation – you need to check out this race!  It is so inspiring!

Judging by the photos, the race looked like a lot of fun.

This race is always amazing. Many races are run for a cause/charity, but with this one you see the survivors, hear their stories, and are reminded exactly what you are walking/running for as you begin the race. Just so inspirational.

Thanks for being a supportive running partner, Lauren!

This looks like such a fantastic race!
We have a very similar race here in the UK called the Race For Life, it’s an all women race with pink as it’s theme and it’s raising money for cancer research, specifically breast cancer.
I’m glad you had such a great time, it looks like a lot of fun as well as quite moving 🙂
